Just imagine you are in a grocery store. You pass someone in the aisle, and out of the blue, you give them a friendly, warm smile. You may not have known it, but they may have had a very difficult day and needed someone, anyone, to offer them a little bit of kindness. Numerous people have been touched by your presence without you even realizing it. Now just think, what if you were to make it a conscious practice to offer kindness wherever you go?
Most of us do not have the destiny to make dramatic changes in the world, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, or Mother Teresa. But we can have an influence in our immediate world for the better. Mother Teresa once said, "We cannot all do great things. But we can do small things with great love."
Perhaps there is someone at work whom you notice eats alone every day. Why not ask them if you can join them? Or maybe you learn the cashier’s name who you see regularly, give up a better seat on the bus, or listen to an old man tell his stories. At first, it may feel a little strange, but after a while, you will look forward to finding ways to offer kindness.
Years ago, I used to commute across a bridge almost every day, and as a random act of kindness, I would often pay the bridge toll of the person behind me. I would never know who this person was, but I knew it brought a smile to someone’s face.
It almost seems selfish, but when you offer genuine selfless kindness, you yourself feel blessed. We can be secret agents of kindness, offering light in this world. Please find someone today and every day who could use your light.
